At a time when climate anxiety and environmental degradation dominate the headlines, young changemakers are stepping up with solutions that inspire hope. One such story comes from Uganda, where Kavuma Johnmary, founder of Upcycle Africa, is transforming plastic waste into opportunity — and has been recognized as one of the 2025 Youth Climate Stories competition winners for his groundbreaking work.

From Pollution to Purpose

Plastic pollution has infiltrated every corner of our planet — from ocean depths to mountaintops, Arctic ice to the very air we breathe. But where many see an overwhelming crisis, Johnmary sees a chance to create meaningful change.

Through Upcycle Africa, he and his team collect discarded plastic bottles that would otherwise litter communities or clog waterways. Instead of ending up in landfills, this waste is transformed into durable, eco-friendly construction materials. These upcycled bricks are then used to build affordable, sustainable homes — particularly in underserved communities, including refugee settlements.

Building More Than Just Houses

The impact goes far beyond bricks and mortar.

Upcycle Africa’s model is rooted in youth empowerment and environmental responsibility. Young people are trained to become green entrepreneurs, equipped with hands-on skills in recycling, construction, and eco-innovation. This approach not only creates green jobs for marginalized youth, but also fosters a culture of climate leadership across Uganda and beyond.

Each home built is a powerful symbol of what’s possible when innovation meets purpose. It’s about more than shelter — it’s about restoring dignity, reducing carbon footprints, and giving waste a second chance.

Global Recognition, Local Impact

Winning the 2025 Youth Climate Stories competition is a testament to the growing global recognition of Johnmary’s work. His story exemplifies the kind of youth-led, community-rooted solutions that are urgently needed in the fight against climate change.

As we celebrate this milestone, Upcycle Africa remains committed to scaling impact, amplifying youth voices, and continuing to reimagine waste as a resource for resilience.
