The front line of urban plastic management, providing dignified livelihoods while closing the plastic tap.
Our Community Collection Hubs are not just waste points; they are economic engines for marginalized settlements. By establishing hubs within walking distance of waste hotspots, we eliminate the logistics barrier that keeps plastic in the environment.
We engage over 2,500 active waste collectors—primarily youth and women—who are trained in material identification and segregation at the source. This ensure that the plastic entering our system is clean, categorized, and ready for high-value processing.
Active Collectors
Community members bring plastic to the hub. We pay a premium price per kilogram, turning waste into a liquid currency for local breadwinners.
To maintain industrial-grade feedstock quality, every bottle is washed and dried on-site to remove contaminants and organic matter.
Sorted plastic is compacted by hand or small-scale machinery to reduce volume, making transport to our central facility more carbon-efficient.
Informal waste pickers are often stigmatized. Upcycle Africa changes this narrative by providing 'Wastepreneur' identity cards, safety gear, and formal training. Our hubs also serve as training centers for financial literacy and health awareness.
We currently operate 12 hubs. Our goal is to scale to 100 hubs across East and West Africa, removing an estimated 50,000 tonnes of plastic annually while supporting 20,000+ waste workers.
