A Unified Circular Ecosystem

Six integrated pillars designed to solve the plastic crisis while building housing and opportunity.

The Blueprint

Our Theory of Change

If we provide marginalized communities with the technology and markets to turn plastic waste into high-value products, then waste stops being pollution and becomes a resource. This shift creates jobs, cleans cities, and provides affordable, climate-resilient housing for millions.

Unlike traditional NGOs that rely solely on donations, Upcycle Africa is a social business. The sales from our eco-bricks and circular products fund the expansion of our collection hubs, making our impact self-sustaining and scalable.

The Process

Operational Flow

How we manage 1,200+ tonnes of plastic from collection to construction.

1. Sourcing and Collection

Aggregated from households, hotels, and schools via marginalized youth and women collectors. Every collector is verified and paid via mobile money to ensure safety and transparency.

2. Segregation and Pre-processing

At the community hubs, bottles are washed, dried, and sorted by type (PET, HDPE, PP). This manual process creates hundreds of entry-level jobs for women in the settlements.

3. Value Addition and Distribution

The sorted plastic is shredded, compacted, and transformed into structural eco-bricks or industrial flakes. These are then deployed to construction sites or sold to B2B partners.

4. Social Impact Monitoring

We use AI and mobile surveys to track the impact on our collectors' lives—monitoring income levels, education access for their children, and community health improvements.

A Commitment to Inclusion

Upcycle Africa has an explicit inclusion policy: **women, youth and refugees** are prioritized both as beneficiaries and in decision-making roles. We practice inclusive hiring and ensure that our hubs are safe environments for marginalized groups.

Women First

70% of our hub processing staff are women, providing them with their first formal employment.

Youth Jobs

Our collection network is 90% youth-led, providing an alternative to urban street crime.
